Info about Fortified Wine

A fortified wine is a delicious wine that is made by adding additional alcohol content during the process of fermentation. The alcohol is added to the base wine and thereby making the average wine content to the 17 - 20%. Fortified wines are available in two different styles either dry or sweet styles. Some of the most common fortified wines are Port, Sherry, Marsala and Madeira. The most fortified wines are made from the blends of grape and some of the other vintages.

The most relevant factor in determination for the fortified will lie on the major focus of determining the sweetness of the wine and its life. If a sweeter wine is required then the neutral wine spirits are added within a short period of time of the fermentation. Once the alcohol is added to the base wine the yeast in process stops the conversion of sugar to alcohol and the remaining sugar content of the grapes is left as the residual sugar. In case you want to make a dry wine then it is important that you allow the full fermentation process to take on and allow it act on the residual sugar and then in turn you can add the residual spirits.
